‘Layer Cake 2’ Will Shoot in 2016 with Jason Statham
Maybe you didn’t know, but Jason Statham has long wanted to take the lead in a sequel to Layer Cake, based on the novel Viva La Madness. In a recent interview, the action icon revealed that the movie is still happening, and he calls it “the most exciting thing” on his plate at the moment. The film will even shoot as early as 2016.
Daniel Craig starred in 2005’s Layer Cake, which was one of the most critically acclaimed movies of that year and lead to the actor taking over the role of James Bond. The franchise is based on JJ Connolly’s book series, about which Jason Statham states:
“JJ Connelly’s written a great book called Viva La Madness, and we’re taking that book and doing something great with it. He’s such a talented writer… the book was incredible. I loved Layer Cake and this is [if anything] better. The chance to work with someone of that calibre, do something back home, it’s the most exciting thing on my plate…We’re doing it next year, and it’s full steam ahead. We’re putting all the finance together, and we’re off and racing.”
JJ Connolly will adapt the screenplay from his own novel. The story is set ten years after Layer Cake, and will track an unnamed protagonist as he returns to London. There, his friend Mister Mortimer attempts to drag him back into the criminal world. Before returning to the world of gritty crime action, Jason Statham will next be seen in the action comedy Spy, which is in theaters this summer.
